Indiana man killed in Marshall County officer-involved shooting tied to sex predator sting

MARSHALL COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting in Guntersville that happened on Saturday.

According to ALEA, the shooting happened as the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and the Guntersville Police Department were carrying out a joint sex predator operation in the 500 block of Warrenton Shores Drive.

The suspect, identified by ALEA as 27-year-old Jack Andrew Smiley of Muncie, Indiana, allegedly resisted arrest by trying to flee.

Smiley showed a weapon, at which point he was shot by law enforcement, ALEA said. Smiley died at the scene.

Two officers received minor injuries during the ordeal and were treated on scene.

Marshall County Sheriff Phil Sims said two people were arrested in relation to the operation, 19-year-old Kaiden Wilson and 55-year-old Edward Mattox. Both were arrested on charges of traveling to meet a child for an unlawful act and were booked into the Marshall County Jail.

Once the ALEA investigation is complete, findings will be turned over to the Marshall County District Attorney’s Office.
