BARRICADED MAN WHO SHOT 2 GILES COUNTY DEPUTIES SENTENCED

On May 18, 2023, four Giles County deputies arrived at the Lynnville home of William Robbins, Jr. Deputies were sent to the location to check on Robbins, who family members feared was suicidal. When deputies knocked in the door, they heard gunshots inside the residence. The officers then retreated and began attempting to make contact with Robbins via a PA system.
After receiving no response and deploying tear gas, deputies Purvis, Bass, Hunter, and Stringer attempted to make entry into the home. As they did so, Robbins opened fire on them. One bullet struck Deputy Stringer, but was stopped by his ballistic vest. Another bullet struck the ballistic shield carried by Deputy Hunter. Robbins eventually surrendered after Pulaski PD arrived on scene and THP Special Operations attempted to breach the door.
Robbins entered a guilty plea to four counts of Attempted Second Degree Murder. On November 14, 2025, a sentencing hearing was held. After hearing the proof, Judge Julie Carrell Heffington sentenced Robbins to 16 years, to serve. Assistant District Attorney Kyle Anderson prosecuted this case on behalf of the state and the 22nd Judicial District.
Robbins is 67 years old, a Navy Veteran, and had no prior criminal record prior to this incident.
"The bravery and professionalism displayed by the deputies who were there that day was remarkable. It's a miracle that they weren't seriously injured or killed. Mr. Robbins was very fortunate to leave there alive that day also." Brent Cooper, District Attorney.
