Columbia man shot after firing at officers on Skyview Drive, TBI investigating

Columbia police say a man fired a gun at officers outside his home Saturday morning, leading to an exchange of gunfire and a SWAT response.

Officers went to 302 Skyview Drive around 9:33 a.m. Saturday after getting a call that 48-year-old Matthew Kirk was outside with a handgun and shooting into the ground.

When officers arrived, police say Kirk fired several shots at them and one officer shot back inside his house.

A SWAT team and crisis negotiators came to the scene and reached Kirk by phone.

Police say they learned Kirk had been shot several times during the exchange with the first officer.

Due to the potential for life-threatening injuries, an emergency team went into the house and took him into custody without anything else happening.

EMS treated Kirk at the scene and a LifeFlight helicopter took him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for surgery.

District Attorney Brent Cooper has requested that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation respond to conduct an independent investigation.

As is standard procedure in officer-involved shooting incidents, the officer involved will be placed on paid administrative leave while awaiting the outcome of the TBI investigation.
