Man drowns in Buffalo River in Wayne County, sheriff’s office says

A 20-year-old man drowned in the Buffalo River in Wayne County, the sheriff’s office says.

WAYNESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) - A man drowned Saturday afternoon in the Buffalo River, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

WCSO said deputies responded to reports of a possible drowning on the Buffalo River around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Authorities later recovered the body of a 20-year-old man from the river. WCSO said it has requested an autopsy to determine the man’s cause of death, but no foul play is suspected at this time.

In addition to the sheriff’s office, the Wayne County Emergency Management Agency, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and the Lawrenceburg Fire Department Dive team responded and assisted at the scene.

The victim’s name has not been released as WCSO works to notify his next of kin.

“Please keep the family of the victim and first responders in your thoughts and prayers as they process this tragedy,” WCSO said.
