A cybertip leads to an investigation by the TBI involving sexual exploration case that results in a Lawrence County man being arrested.
Carlos Barturen was arrested in connection with an ongoing Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for a sexual exploitation case after authorities received a cybertip.
TBI’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) squad reports that Juan Carlos Barturen, 46, was arrested on two counts of statutory rape by an authority figure, one count of soliciting sexual exploitation of a minor/exploitation of a minor by electronic means and one count of especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor.
Agents were notified May 30 that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children had received an internet tip detailing sexual exploitation and abuse of a woman while she was a minor. During the ensuing investigation, agents report that they, “determined Barturen raped and sexually exploited the victim multiple times.”
Agents with TBI ICAC and Homeland Security Investigations, in conjunction with members of Nashville International Airport police, intercepted and arrested Barturen at the airport.
Barturen was booked into the Lawrence County Detention Center and held without bond.
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities said Barturen was known to travel often between Tennessee and Florida, and they are asking other potential victims to come forward. Victims may report potential abuse by calling 1-800-TBI-FIND or by emailing TipsToTBI@tn.gov.
