On Friday February 27, 2026 at just before noon Lawrence County Fire Rescue personnel were dispatched to a grass, and brush fire that had gotten out of control. Units from Gandy,Westpoint, and Leoma responded the scene to find field, and wooded areas on fire as well as two disabled vehicles that were parked in field. The fire is believed to have involved 15-17 acres of field and woods in total.

Our personnel were able to utilize back pack blowers and saws to cut in fire lines around the fire in the wooded areas that weren’t accessible brush trucks to slow the progress of the fire until we could extinguish the fire with flappers, rakes, and water extinguishers while our other personnel utilized brush trucks and tankers to extinguish the field and vehicles that were on fire.

The fire was a result of a controlled burn that became out of control after a sudden and powerful change of wind direction. The property owner did have a burn permit, and had taken several precautions to ensure control of the fire. We want to recognize the efforts of the property owner who utilized a lawn mower to make a make shift fire break ahead of the fire after it had jumped the initial fire break. His actions definitely helped in containing the field fire portion.

We would like to thank Lawrence County EMA and Lawrence County E-911 for assisting with the operation.
