Loretto, Tennessee Mayor Jesse Turner released statement regarding the progress of two sidewalk projects.

Jesse Turner released the following statement on Friday:

"Let’s end this week with a focus on a couple of positive things happening in Loretto. We currently have two sidewalk projects ongoing - both in different phases. Sidewalks are an important livability factor for communities as they keep pedestrians safe by separating them from vehicular traffic, create accessible connections throughout the city, encourage physical activity such as walking and running, and can enliven business districts. Loretto’s sidewalk projects are just the beginning of what I hope is a network of sidewalks connecting our residential, retail, and recreational areas.

The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) project is nearing completion with the engineer’s punch list being the lone item remaining. A new sidewalk was constructed from Collier Street to Riddle Lane connecting with the sidewalk leading from Collier Street to South Lawrence Elementary. This project was funded with 100% federal funding (no cost to the City of Loretto) through the SRTS program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. It will be the last project of its kind as the FAST (The Fixing America’s Surface Transportation) Act, our federal transportation bill, did not reauthorize the funding at 100%. Many thanks to Croy Engineering and Brad Slater Construction, LLC for a job well done.

Our Downtown sidewalk project is being funded through a Transportation Alternative Programs (TAP) Grant administered by TDOT. This project consists of new and reconstructed sidewalks compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) along Main Street from Church Street to Commerce Street with connections to the Loretto Branch Library and the Senior Citizens of Loretto Building. The City of Loretto is responsible for a 20% match on this project. Civil Group, LLC is our project engineer with construction being performed by Brad Slater Construction. Once completed Main Street will be resurfaced.

I am excited about seeing the completion of the sidewalks in our downtown area. Thriving revitalized downtowns are often the results of both public and private investment. The Bank of Loretto building (formally Nana’s Pizzeria) is one such building that has much potential. Loretto Telecom is currently seeking a restaurant tenant to occupy the space. The sidewalks will also complement Weather’s Park where the Loretto Farmers Market is held each Friday from 4 - 6 pm.

We are always actively seeking opportunities to improve the City of Loretto. State Representative Clay Doggett and Senator Joey Hensley along with our friends at the South Central Tennessee Development District and the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce are crucial partners as we strive to improve our residential, retail, and industrial opportunities and services through infrastructure improvements."
