Information is being sought concerning the whereabouts of a local man, wanted in connection with a burglary incident that occurred during the weekend at a Henryville Road property. Lawrence County Sheriff John Myers is asking the public to report any information regarding the whereabouts of George Michael Bennett, age 30, of 1018 North Brace Road. Bennett is wanted in connection with the recent burglary that left the property owners suffering a $60,000 loss.According to police reports, deputies were called to the property Saturday morning after the owners, who reside in Brentwood, arrived to find that their garage door had been pried open and busted and a back door had been kicked in.

The person responsible for the crime had reportedly rummaged through the garage as well as the interior of the home, stealing a long list of items. Some of the items that were reported missing were a shotgun that was taken from a closet, a skeet throwing machine, Stihl weed eater, fishing rods, various tools, side-by-side utility vehicles, three Kawasaki brand four-wheelers, a 2016 John Deer tractor with a yellow bush hog attached, and a 10’ by 6’ utility trailer. Deputies noted in their reports that Bennett was involved in a pursuit the previous night in the wake of a domestic altercation. He reportedly fled on a four-wheeler but was not apprehended.

When deputies spoke with area residents, one reported that Bennett had come to his home that morning asking for help. Bennett told the resident that he had been stranded on the roadside when his four-wheeler ran out of gas.The resident said he took a gas can to the location to help him. He said that Bennett was using the four-wheeler to pull a trailer that was loaded down with a lot of items, including fishing rods and tools.

He said this made him suspicious, but that Bennett left after he put gas in the tank. During the course of the investigation detectives searched the area where Bennett had run out of gas. They reported finding a long gun discarded in the ditch along with a camouflage coat with tools in the pocket. A tip about the location of the stolen tractor led deputies to a Mount Joy Road home.

They, along with deputies with the Maury County Sheriff’s Department approached the property and report seeing Bennett flee on a foot into a wooded area.During a search of the property deputies report finding the missing recreational vehicles along with a John Deere tractor with a yellow bush hog.

The owner was brought to the property and was able to positively identify the items. Deputies pointed out that the tractor had been used about the property on several projects.
