Stolen gun recovered during traffic stop

Local authorities recovered a firearm stolen out of South Carolina while conducting a traffic stop in Lawrenceburg recently. Reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department show that an officer initiated a traffic stop on Weakley Creek Road after he noticed that the driver failed to stop at a stop sign.

The officer reports that the window would not roll down, so the driver had to open his door to speak with him. As he did so he noticed an open container of beer as well as a handgun in the door storage compartment.

The officer took possession of the handgun for safety purposes. He ran a check on the serial number during the stop and discovered that it had been reported as stolen out of South Carolina.

The driver explained that his father had purchased the gun at a gun show. As a result of the incident twenty-one year old Lanning Road resident Jared Houston Sherrill was arrested on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and theft of property.

He was additionally cited for the traffic infraction. He is scheduled to appear in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on December 6, 2018.
