Fraud incident reported by bank officials

Local bank officials reported to law enforcement officers Friday that a fraud incident had resulted in a near $2,000 loss. Officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department made their way to First Farmers and Merchants Bank, located at 1501 North Locust Avenue, just before 4:00 p.m. Bank officials explained that a customer had deposited a check via ATM the afternoon of July 27. The check, in the amount of $1,950, had been written on a closed account the customer had previously with another bank. By the time the check made it back to the Lawrenceburg branch on September 7, they said the man’s account had a remaining balance of $115.25. That amount was removed from the account at that time. Bank officials said they spoke with the man and he had promised to “come in and make the check right.” Since that time, they said he has stopped answering their calls. The bank issued a certified letter, however it was returned as “not delivered.” Total loss in the case is $1,834.75.
