Plea bargain struck in December death of LCHS student

Lawrenceburg Now

A local teenager who has been jailed since the December, 2017 death of a sixteen-year-old LCHS student struck a plea bargain deal with prosecutors, entering a guilty plea in Lawrence County Circuit Court Monday morning.

Kyle Daniel Welcher, 18, entered an open guilty plea to all four charges pending against him, including one count of reckless homicide and three counts of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon. A sentencing hearing is scheduled to be held next month. Welcher faces a penalty of 2 to 4 years in prison on the homicide charge with a maximum fine of $5,000, and 1 to 3 years on each of the reckless endangerment charges, with fines of up to $3,000 per count.

Welcher was arrested on December 12 in the wake of a shooting incident that resulted in the death of Holley Ann Cullum. Lawrenceburg Police officers answered the call to 1015 Smith Avenue at approximately 8:00 p.m. and found Cullum lying on the porch with a gunshot wound to the neck. She was transported to the local hospital where she later died.

Three other people were reportedly present at the time of the shooting, resulting in the reckless endangerment charges. Welcher left the scene following the shooting, but turned himself in to authorities around two hours later.
