Alert employees observe drug transaction at local market
Lawrenceburg Now
Alert employees reported seeing a possible drug transaction take place in the parking lot of a local market late last week, resulting in the arrest of both parties involved.
Reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department show that officers were called to investigate suspicious vehicles in the parking lot of Kountry Kupboard, 2339 Highway 43 South, just after 6:30 Friday evening.
Employees reported witnessing a possible drug transaction between the individuals inside the vehicles. When officers made contact, they report that the drivers would not grant permission to conduct a search of the vehicles. They then requested that a K-9 unit be dispatched to the scene.
While conducting a license and warrants check on driver Jeffery Mark Porter, age 36, of 142 Spring Creek Road, officers had him exit his vehicle. He was patted down for weapons and officers report finding something in his pocket that they could not identify. They asked him what the item was and report that he pulled from his pocket a substance later identified as methamphetamine.
Reports show that Porter admitted to officers that the driver of the second vehicle, identified as Ben Franklin Burgess, 42, of 1002 North Main Street, Saint Joseph, had sold him the meth for $40.
As a result of the investigation Porter was arrested on a charge of possession of schedule II narcotics. He was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where he was jailed under a bond of $2,500. Burgess was booked under a charge of sale of a Schedule II narcotic. His bond was set at $10,000.
Both Porter and Burgess have been scheduled an initial appearance in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on October 1, 2017.
