Fire quickly contained at Lions Apartments
Press release
On June 17, 2017, just before midnight, fire crews were dispatched to 345 Geri Street for a report structure fire. On arrival firefighters found a three story residential complex with residents exiting out of multiple doors.
Dispatch confirmed that a fire was active in a second floor unit from information gained from police officers that had made entrance before fire crews arrived. Fire crews made entry and accessed the fire room to find the fire already extinguished.
Additional fire crews started an evacuation process with assistance from the police officers on scene. The structure was ventilated to remove the smoke from all floors and overhaul was conducted to check for fire spread, to which none was found.
After the structure was cleared of all smoke and fire gases, and each floor was monitored for air quality, the residents were returned to their apartments with aid from firefighters as many are elderly and needed some assistance walking.
An investigation into the cause of the fire revealed that a second floor resident had left food on the stove while visiting a neighboring apartment.
The quick actions of both firefighters and police officers provided safe and effective aid to all residents at the Geri Street Complex.
