Naco Lake
Fishing at Naco Lake can be like a diamond in the rough for those who know where and when to fish it.
This lake produces Channel Cats, Crappie, Shell Crackers, Sunfish, Warmouths, Large Mouth Bass, and Pickerel in large quantities for those with good fishing savvy.
This little jewel is located just off Napier Rd, on the Western side of the county, just before you get to Nachez Trace Parkway. If you intend to make the trek to Naco, here are a few pointers to get you started in the right direction.
For Crappie, fish from late March to mid-April, at a depth of 3 to 6 feet, using a small minnow on a #6 hook, light float, and a light sinker. Rods should be Ultra light to light action with 6lb to 10lb line. Structure (submerged stumps, tires, logs, etc.) at these depths will be big producers.
As for the Brim Buster Boys, use the same basic gear and bait with Red Wigglers (worms) from mid-April to mid-May. They will be bedding in depths from 2 - 4 feet of water with water temperatures between 72 and 76 degrees.
Finally, for those seeking the large mouth, start your quest in mid-April, working the edges of cover (weed beds, logs, limbs, etc.), in 2 – 8 feet of water.
Your gear should be a combination of light to light medium action rod with matching reels spooled 10lb – 14lb line. Lures should be small to medium top water in your favorite colors.
My favorite is a blue/white #7 Rapala original floater which produced 5 bass over 2 pounds each. My presentation was cast within one foot of the cover, allow the ripples to subside, and give it one or two slight twitches and hold on.
If you’re into non-stop fishing action, and you don’t mind the sore arm and/or back, try Naco Lake, you won’t regret it or forget it.
Until next week, keep your feet dry and your line wet.
