You see them in every community across rural America – small markets that must meet as many
needs as possible for all the people that reside within the area. In the community of Five Points, Tennessee, that market is Mashburn’s General Store – the Heart of Five Points.
Located in the center of Five Points, a short distance from Rabbit Trail Road in southeastern Lawrence County, Mashburn’s General Store has been in operation for around seventy years. The store was founded by Ersie “Drummer” Mashburn, who ran the market until his death. Drummer’s wife, Louise, continues to run the store, putting in long hours, seven days a week, even during what many would consider to be her “retirement years.” Garner Ezell (pictured behind the counter above) assists Mashburn with the running of the store, coming in early each morning to open.

The store was initially situated in an older building, across the roadway from the current location. They made the move into the new building in the early 50’s.
No matter what you are looking for or what you may need, it is likely you will find it at Mashburn’s General Store. From food, to hardware and plumbing supplies, sewing notions, pet and animal food, pet care items, cleaning products, nic nacs, personal care items, or automotive care items, there is absolutely no telling what you might run across. If you need anything – just give them a call and see if they don’t have it somewhere on their heavily laden shelves. If you need to rent a U Haul truck or trailer, Mashburn's is your place. Mashburn's daughter-in-law Anissa Mashburn even runs a flower shop conveniently situated just across the street.
What truly earns Mashburn’s the designation of “The Heart of Five Points,” is the fact that, not only does Mashburn’s seek to meet the needs of all in the community – it also serves as a vital social center. A table and chairs as well as benches are strategically placed so that patrons
can wait on an order from the deli, or just sit and “chew the fat” for a moment – or perhaps all day – depending upon your schedule.
When you strive to fill as many needs as Lois Mashburn and Mashburn’s General Store do each day, you earn the right to be described as “The Heart of Five Points.”
