Democratic Party: Lawrence Countians Want Results and Unity Not Rhetoric and Division

In Chairman Kincaid's letter posted on LawrenceburgNow he states, "We need to work together, not against each other." I agree wholeheartedly with my friend on that point. However, if one actually reads his rhetoric, it's not hard to see that his words ring hollow.

Throughout his entire letter, Kincaid does nothing but use language which divides us as a people. This is typical as these are the same tactics Republicans have been using for years. Moreover, they are the same tactics which resulted in the Republican Party losing the 2006 and 2008 elections by wide margins and have put them on the cusp of becoming a permanent minority party.

What the Republican Party doesn't seem understand is that people are looking for are solutions to the problems in their lives, not more labeling, attacks and division. They want to know how we are going to create a 21st Century economy which will provide good paying jobs for years to come. They want to know how we are going to fix the health care crisis in our country and provide quality, affordable health care to all Americans. They want to know how we are going to provide the kind of education for our children which will allow them to compete in today's every changing world. They want to know what we are going to do to keep our nation safe from those who wish to harm us, as well as repair and build new alliances around the world. They want to know how we are going to end our dangerous addiction to oil and create new alternatives which will allow us to save money, be safer and help combat climate change. In other words, they just want to know that we are putting them first over partisan politics.

It is my hope in the months to come that Chairman Kincaid and the Republican Party will chose to engage in a healthy and serious debate on these issues. Following the likes of Rush Limbaugh who said he hoped our President "failed" or Texas Governor Rick Perry who last week suggested that his state may pursue secession because he disagrees with the President's policies, is no longer an acceptable option. Nor is the tired Republican attack line that suggests members of the Democratic Party are somehow un-Christian. The fact is, no party has a mandate on God. I, along with every other member of my party love and praise the Lord just as much as our Republican friends. So let's not use our God as a political football, instead let's focus on putting policies in place and doing actions that will make our Lord proud.

Last November the people spoke clearly. They want a new kind of politics that unites us, not divides us and and a kind of leadership that will help solve the big problems that we all face as a country.

The Democratic Party has strong leaders and an equally strong vision for our future. Whether it be President Obama, Governor Bredesen or our leaders here in Lawrence County, it is clear the Democratic Party is serious about governing and working to ensure that every American has an opportunity to achieve the American Dream.

The work has just begun.

Regards,

County Commissioner Chris D. Jackson
Vice Chairman, Lawrence County Democratic Party
