Murder of George Tiller
I have read several articles regarding the murder of George Tiller, the doctor who performed abortions even as late as 21 weeks.
First let me say that I do not believe in abortion but neither to I believe in killing those that do. If Scott Roeder is convicted, he should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
This is a very unfortunate and sad story but it should not be used by abortion advocates to label all pro life advocates as extremists, hate mongers or intolerant, right wing conspirators.
There are those that take their views to the extreme, but they make up a small percentage and they make it harder on those of us with more common sense views to present credible, honest and forthright arguments against abortion.
Although I would like to see abortion completely eradicated, I don't believe this will ever be the case, at least this side of Heaven. However, I do believe there are more reachable goals.
Statistics show us that 97% of all abortions are performed for "social" reasons. In other words just because pregnancy happened at an inconvenient time in someone's life.
That leaves only 3% of abortions being performed because of risk to the health of the mother or baby, or those pregnancies commenced by rape or incest.
Why not aggressively promote abstinence among teen-agers and young adults to prevent the biggest percentage of unwanted pregnancies?
This would greatly reduce the number of abortions and put most abortion providers out of business, simply because of the reduced demand. Secondly, why not promote adoption as a viable "choice".
Why is abortion the only "choice" considered acceptable? There are thousands of couples who would love to adopt infants if they had a chance.
Some of these couples are infertile and some simply love children. Why not allow unwanted babies the chance to live and to grow up in one of these loving homes?
I know that these ideas seem to simple for such a complex issue. You have your right to your opinions. However, I submit that they are not so.
We have grown too accustomed to instant gratification, sexual promiscuity and loose morals. GOD'S word speaks against these things for one reason.
HE knew that these kinds of lifestyles would destroy society in general and individual lives specifically. He did not condemn these things to take the joy out of our life.
He did so in order that we might live more abundant and free lives. The murder of anyone is aggregious, no matter what the color of their skin, their political or religious beliefs, or even their stand for or against abortion.
We must protect the sanctity of life if we are going to survive as a society. Dwight
