Commissioner Chris D. Jackson released the following statement on the passage of the new state legislative district boundaries:
"I am disappointed that today the State House passed a redistricting plan that divides Lawrence County into two legislative districts. Even though an amendment passed that moved the dividing line from the south end of our county to the north end of the county, it is still bad for Lawrence County and especially bad for all those who will now be in the extreme minority of the newly formed district.
I am also disappointed that Rep. Hensley did not vote against the proposal after days of saying he would. Representative Hensley said he would oppose any plan that would divide our county, but while he was present, he chose not to take a stand on behalf of the citizens of Lawrence County on this horrible proposal. I look forward to hearing his explanation for not keeping his word on this important issue.
I want to thank all of the local officials and citizens who came out in support of keeping Lawrence County united. The citizens understood the consequences of this proposal and made their voices heard. Going forward, we must do all we can to make the best of the bad situation we have been presented with. As leaders, we will do all we can to make this transition as smooth as possible for the people of Lawrence County."
