Leaders Tweak City’s Personnel Rules And Regulations

Lawrenceburg leaders approved two ordinances Thursday that have to do with the city’s Personnel Rules and Regulations.

The first ordinance, approved on second and final reading, amends the section of the municipal code regarding employee benefits. The amendment eliminates health benefits provided by the city once an employee has retired.

The second ordinance, dealing with hiring and retention of employees and relatives, was approved on first reading. It would amend the municipal code to allow retention of employees, “should a family situation occur after employment.”

The code currently does not allow for a person to work under the direct supervision of a relative. City Attorney Alan Betz explained that the change was considered due to a pending marriage that, under the current code, would require that an employee be fired.

Betz said that the situation involved a female employee who is engaged to marry her supervisor’s brother. Leaders felt that an individual should not suffer loss of employment due to this type of situation.

The amendment would not change the portion of the code that prevents the hiring of relatives, Betz said, but rather to add some exceptions.

The ordinance is expected to be brought for second and final reading during the council’s December 23 meeting.
