Summertown Man Sustains Knife Wound In Altercation

A Summertown man sustained a knife wound after becoming involved in an altercation with an acquaintance on Monday.

The forty-three year old victim reported to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that he and his wife had been sitting inside their car in the driveway of their North Brace Road home at around 7:45 p.m. when they were approached fifty-five year old William “Howard” Gray, who was on foot. He said that Gray was cursing, yelling, and making threats to kill him.

The victim said that he realized that Gray was intoxicated and approached him to “try to tell him to leave and go back home.” He said that Gray began to fight with him, pulled out a hook knife and swung it at him causing lacerations to his neck and back.

The victim told deputies that he struck Gray in the face several times while trying to defend himself. He said that he went inside his house and that his son drove Gray back to his Lentz Road home. Gray then got a ride to the home of another acquaintance on North Brace Road.

The victim was transported to Maury Regional Medical Center for medical attention. Reports indicate that it took ten stitches to close the wound.

When he confronted Gray, the reporting officer indicates that he told him, “He did not have a knife that he knew of,” and that he denied having cut the victim. No knife was found on his person and deputies were unable to locate it at the scene.

“Due to the evidence and witnesses,” Gray was placed under arrest on charges of aggravated assault and incarcerated at the Lawrence County Detention Center.
