Loretto Warning Sirens Will Soon Be Operational

Loretto leaders learned Monday that the city’s newly-installed early warning sirens will soon be operational.

The city was awarded a Community Development Block Grant in the amount of $133,455 in November of last year for the construction of an early storm warning system. Installation of the system has now been completed.

City Manager Keith Smith said during a meeting of the Loretto Board of Aldermen Monday evening that paperwork was submitted to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on September 30, requesting a change of frequency.

Leaders were informed that on the earliest available date following the required two-week waiting period (which ends October 14), FCC officials will arrive to reprogram one of the three radios and repair any other remaining issues. Once that is completed, the system is expected to be brought online.

“Before the end of this month,” Smith said, “All three should be working properly.”
