School Liaison Committee Voted To Recommend The Purchase Of Two Properties
Press release
On Tuesday, the Lawrence County Commission's School Liaison Committee voted to recommend the purchase of two properties in Loretto and Summertown to the full county commission for the purpose of constructing new high schools in the near future.
The property in Loretto is on Second Avenue South, beside South Lawrence Elementary. The Summertown property is located on North Brace Road beside near Summertown Elementary School.
The school system has had an option on both properties since earlier this year. Each property is approximately 35 acres and will cost a total of $600,000, which according to architects is cheaper per acre than properties involved in similar school projects around the State.
"I am pleased this committee chose to move the school building process along by recommending that the county purchase the selected properties in Loretto and Summertown," said Commissioner Chris Jackson who chairs the county's school liaison committee.
"The completion of these new high schools in Loretto and Summerttown is important to our entire county because it will provide education equity and opportunity to all students in our school system and it will also make our county more competitive in recruiting industry. This is a crucial step in making sure this building program continues to move forward." Jackson added.
Members of the committee say the recommendation will now go to the Budget Committee for consideration and if passed the full commission will consider the purchase at the next regular session meeting in November.
