Abducted Child Located In Mississippi

A six year old Lawrenceburg girl who was abducted from her school by her non-custodial mother Monday morning was located in Mississippi Monday night.

Authorities had issued an Endangered Child Alert after Ashlyn Tay Young was taken from David Crockett Elementary School by mother Amanda Taye Young, age 30.

Authorities said that Amanda Young had no legal right to take Ashlyn, who had been in the custody of her grandmother. They said that there was concern for Ashlyn's safety due to her mother's mental state.

A press release issued Monday through the Lawrence County Board of Education explained that the incident occurred at 7:55 a.m., just before the school day began, and prior to the locking of student access doors.

“The parent, who had been denied permission by school administrators to withdraw the child, nevertheless entered the hallways and took the child, despite the efforts of the faculty and staff…”

Once outside the school, witnesses reported that they got into a four-door white car with Alabama license plates, occupied by two men, and left. Authorities suspected that they might be heading toward Mobile, Alabama.

Just before midnight agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and George County, Mississippi Sheriff's Department, in conjunction with the Lawrenceburg Police Department, were able to locate Ashlyn Young at a residence in Lucedale, Mississippi. She was then returned to her grandmother's custody.

Amanda Young was arrested and incarcerated at the George County, Mississippi Jail where she awaited extradition to Lawrenceburg. She will face charges of custodial interference.
