Grenade Discovered In Bucket Of Scrap Metal

Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) responded to a local business Tuesday after a hand grenade was discovered in a bucket of scrap metal.

Employees of Grimes Recycling notified the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department of their find just before 2:30. They said that they had been emptying and sorting buckets of scrap metal when they found the grenade. They said that they quickly shut down the business and called for assistance.

The employees said that several individuals had sold scrap the previous day, but that they were unable to identify the specific individual who had sold the lot containing the grenade. They did provide the department with a list for further investigation.

Department officials determined that the grenade was possibly a Japanese type. They notified ATF and agents with the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Squad made their way to the scene to take possession of the grenade.
