Meth Charges Issued After Driver Narrowly Avoids Collision With Police Car

Meth charges were issued against a local man on Sunday after he narrowly avoided a collision with a police car.

According to reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department the officer was parked when the driver approached him near the Liberty Avenue/Jackson Street intersection.

The officer reports that the driver, “Was driving right next to a curb and was heading right toward my police car.” The officer reports that he turned on his headlights to alert the driver to his presence, but that the driver failed to move over.

The officer indicated that, “When he got within a few feet of me he swerved hard to the left and just missed me by a few inches.” The officer then activated his emergency lights and stopped the driver on Buffalo Road.

The officer reports that the driver became nervous when he questioned him about any alcohol or drug consumption, eventually admitting that he had smoked synthetic marijuana. The officer says that he asked the driver, “If I had you step out of the car to check for illegal substances, would I find any on you?”

At that point the driver reportedly began to reach between the seats in the car and continued to do so even after being ordered to stop. The officer had him step out and place his hands on top of the car. He says that the driver repeatedly turned around, reaching for his right front pocket.

He said that he had to place the man’s hands back on top of the car and initiate a pat-down to check for weapons. “When I felt his right front pocket,” the officer reported, “I could feel what I recognized to be some type of pipe.”

The officer requested that another unit be dispatched to assist. He reports that the driver, Eric Kenneth Dycus, Jr., age 20, of 71 Genson Road, was placed in handcuffs. The officer retrieved the pipe which he said he, “Recognized to be used to smoke meth.”

When the officer searched the area of the car where Dycus was reaching, he reports finding a black zipper bag that contained a total of 17 small plastic bags that held crystal meth. He reports that 16 of the bags contained .65 grams of the substance, the remaining one contained 1 gram. Altogether officers seized 11.4 grams of crystal meth.

Also seized from inside the vehicle were some digital scales, several plastic bags, razors that bore drug residue, a marijuana grinder, an iPhone, an iPod, and $103 in cash.

As a result of the operation Dycus was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where he was booked under charges that include possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of resale and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also issued citations on charges of reckless driving and failure to show proof of insurance.

Dycus was incarcerated without bond. He was assigned an initial appearance in General Sessions Court on September 4, 2014.
