Mom Locks Nine Year Old Out Of Home, Then Leaves For Hours

A local woman was arrested Monday after authorities found that she had locked her nine year old daughter out of their home before leaving her alone for hours.

A neighbor reported the incident to Lawrenceburg Police officers. She said that the girl had been hiding in a stairwell at the apartment complex and had asked her for something to drink.

She told officers she gave the girl a drink and fed her a sandwich. She said there were no lights on in the child's apartment. She knocked on the door and got no answer, then called authorities.

Both the neighbor and apartment manager reported that the girl had been left unattended on several occasions. The manager said other residents had reported that the child would ask them for food and drinks.

Officers determined that the girl had been left unattended for around 3 ½ hours.

Officers were able to make contact with the mother, twenty-eight year old Michelle Lynn Earls, who had only been home for a few minutes. She said she had gone to a local pharmacy to pick up medication, but was unclear on what time she had left or returned.

She said she had left the girl because she had been "throwing a fit" to stay with friends in another building. She said she allowed her to stay, but that she had not contacted the parents of her friends.

Earls' boyfriend reported that they had walked to businesses along North Locust Avenue to pick up work applications.

A relative took the child for the night. Afterwards, Earls was arrested on child neglect charges. She was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where she was held under a $1,000 bond.
