Council Votes To Increase Cost Of Plots At Mimosa Cemetery

Members of the Lawrenceburg City Council have voted to increase the purchase price of plots located inside Mimosa Cemetery on East Gaines Street.

The resolution approved is to increase cost of the plots to $400 each. Prior to approval Councilmember Ronald Fox asked to amend the resolution, allowing that the price increase not go into effect immediately, but rather in sixty days’ time.

“This would give folks who may have procrastinated a chance to buy them at the current price,” he said. Fox also requested an amendment, in the interim, to limit the number of plots that may be purchased by a single individual to two.

Councilmember Jamie Sevier inquired about the reason for the price increase. Mayor Keith Durham explained, “Because the city is selling them so cheap that they have people coming in and buying up whole lots, then sub-selling them…The city’s mowing someone else’s property.”

The resolution, as amended, was approved on a unanimous vote.
