Authorities Say Resident Did The Right Thing Barring Potential Scam Artist From Her Home

Authorities say that a local woman handled the situation appropriately when a man she believed to be a scam artist attempted to gain access to her home Wednesday.

The victim, age 66, called deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department to her Chisholm Creek Road home around 5:30 p.m. She told them that a man in a white van had stopped at her home shortly before. She said he claimed to be from Jamaica and said he was trying to establish a cleaning business.

The victim told deputies that the man asked numerous times to go into her house to “show her his product.” She said that she stolidly refused and he eventually gave her a brochure with contact information and left.

Deputies agreed that this was likely a scam and informed the resident that she had done the right thing by barring him from her home.

Authorities urge residents to follow this example. They continue to warn the public not to allow strangers into their homes without first verifying the legitimacy of their claims through local law enforcement agencies.
