Leoma Fire Department Involved In Single Vehicle Crash
Press release
On Thursday, June 11th, 2015 at approximately 2 p.m., the Leoma Fire Department was dispatched to an emergency call where a piece of heavy equipment had overturned several times, critically injuring it's operator.
While en route to the scene, the responding apparatus from Leoma Fire Department was involved in a single vehicle crash in which the apparatus left the roadway and struck a utility pole.
The two responding firefighters on the apparatus involved in the crash were treated on the scene and transported by Lawrence County EMS to Southern Tennessee Regional Hospital of Lawrenceburg where they were treated for non- life threatening injuries.
“This is an unfortunate accident but, as we know, emergency response brings with it many dangers. We are very blessed that our firefighters were not injured more severely in this incident. We ask for the community's continued support as our men make a full recovery,” stated Lawrence County Fire and Rescue Association Assistant Director Tyler McDow.
Mutual Aid units from Center Point, Loretto, and New Prospect Fire Department's responded on to the heavy equipment accident, while additional units from Leoma and New Prospect Fire Department's responded to the scene of the apparatus crash. Additional units from the Lawrenceburg Fire Department were placed on standby to cover the effected service area.
Fire Department response to the Leoma Fire District will not be interrupted because of the loss of the apparatus, as a local fire apparatus dealer has provided the department with a loaner unit to use temporarily.
Lawrence County Fire and Rescue Departments, who respond to an average of over 1,500 calls annually, maintain policies requiring all members to meet and exceed the State of Tennessee requirements for emergency vehicle operators. This incident marks the first apparatus crash in Lawrence County since 2004.
The names of the firefighter's involved the crash are not being released due to patient confidentiality. The crash is being investigated by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
