Site Selected For New Loretto High School

After weeks of deliberating and seeking land options in and around Loretto, the South End Site Selection Committee has recommended a property for the proposed new high school in Loretto.

On Tuesday, the committee voted to recommend property directly south of South Lawrence School, on Second Avenue, for purchase. The property is owned by Curtis Peters of Lawrenceburg, a long time educator in Lawrence County.

The committee's recommendation includes the purchase of 35 acres, which according to architects is more than enough space for the construction of a new school, vocational classrooms, gym, football field and any additional fields that may be added at a later date.

Architects said the property is an ideal site due to its location and flat and clear terrain. They also point out that during the construction of the new high school, traffic flow and parking will addressed and improved upon at South Lawrence School, an issue that has needed to be addressed for years according to school officials.

The committee's recommendation will be voted upon by the School Board on June 9th and will then be subject to the approval of the county commission later in the year.

Commissioner Chris Jackson, a member of the committee said, "I appreciate this committee's work over the past several weeks. Finding property available for a new school was not easy, but we are all excited we are now moving forward."

"In the weeks to come, it is crucial the school system and the county continue to work together to push forward with this building program to get new high schools in Loretto and Summertown.

Achieving education equity for all students is our top priority. It's now time to make it a reality,” Jackson added.
