First Step Taken For Improvements To County Buildings

The initial step has been taken in a plan that would result in improvements to buildings that house three county departments.

On Thursday members of the Lawrence County Board of Commissioners voted to approve resolutions regarding structures that house the Lawrence County Health Department, Solid Waste Transfer Station, and Ambulance Service.

The first resolution authorized the County Executive to enter into a contract agreement with the engineering firm of Heathcoat and Davis, “To investigate, recommend, design and oversee improvements to be made to said buildings.”

Commissioners indicated that the planned work involves putting a new roof over an existing building at the transfer station and identifying a means of repairing a leak around an air conditioning system at the health department. The commission has allocated $4,700 to get the project to the bid stage.

The second resolution was to authorize the County Executive to enter into a contract agreement with architect Jerry Reynolds for the same type of work related to improvements at the ambulance service.

Commissioner and Ambulance Service Director Larry Glass pointed out that quotes had been obtained for the project at one time. He said that at that time the quote exceeded $25,000 therefore county guidelines require that the services of an architect be secured. Budget Director Teresa Purcell pointed out that $175,000 has already been appropriated for the ambulance service project.

Commissioners voted unanimously to approve both resolutions.
