Local Man Reports Identity Theft

An investigation was initiated Saturday after a local man discovered that he had become a victim of identity theft.

The victim stopped by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department to report that he had received notification from a collection agency about two credit card accounts that had been opened in his name. He told deputies that he had a debit card, but had applied for no credit cards.

He found that an account had been established with Capital One in December of last year using his name and social security number.

He said it had an outstanding balance of $95 and had accrued $65 in late fees. The second account had an outstanding balance of $91.

The victim was advised to contact his bank to have his accounts monitored and to take other precautions. The matter currently remains under investigation through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
