Charges Issued Against Boyfriend For Assault And Kidnapping

Charges were issued against a local man Friday in connection with a domestic assault incident during which his girlfriend sustained several injuries.

The victim, age 49, summoned deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department to her Glenn Springs Road home around 11:40 p.m. Deputies noted that she was bleeding and that there were many blood drops and smears throughout the home. Numerous items had been overturned and broken, as well.

The victim was bleeding from a cut on her finger and had sustained bites to her arm and abdomen. She was transported to Crockett Hospital for medical attention.

The victim told deputies that she and her boyfriend, twenty-seven year old Matthew Dewayne Bumpas, had been engaged in an altercation during which he threw her against a wall.

She said that he grabbed her around the neck and placed his other hand over her nose and mouth, briefly preventing her from breathing. She said he had struck her on the head, pushed her to the floor then held her head on the floor with his knee.

The victim reported that while fighting back she had struck Bumpas with a lamp, clawed him several times, and grabbed his testicles at one point.

She said she attempted to flee through the rear door but that he physically restrained her and would not allow her to leave.

She said she attempted to place a 911 call, but that Bumpas took her cell phone and continued the assault. She said he eventually left the premises.

As a result of the investigation, deputies obtained warrants against Bumpas charging him with the crimes of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated domestic assault, and theft under $500.
