Mustangs QB Matt Rosson Signs With Sewanee

Matt Rosson lead Loretto to back to back TSSAA playoff appearances. The Mustangs advanced to the third round in 2012 and the second round in 2013.

Rosson amassed over 2000 yards passing and 1300 yards rushing during two seasons as the Mustang QB. He was also named the 2013 District 12A MVP.

Loretto head coach Lee Boyd said "Matt's leadership and character will be hard to replace here at Loretto. His work ethic and dual threat ability will be well utilized at Sewanee. The Tigers run a very similar offense to ours."

Rosson was highly recruited by several NCAA Division III and NAIA programs. Rosson said "I selected The University of the South because of the academic reputation and the historic legacy of Sewanee. It also helps that it?s close to home so my family can attend most of the football games. I truly feel blessed to have this opportunity."

The Sewanee Tigers were pioneers in American intercollegiate athletics. Their 1899 football team had perhaps the best season in college football history, winning all 12 of their games, 11 by shutout, and outscoring their opponents 322-10.

Ten of their twelve opponents, including all five of their road trip victims, remain major college football powers to this day. The team beat the likes of: Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, LSU, and Auburn. Recently, the College Football Hall of Fame held a vote of the greatest historic teams of all time, where the 1899 Iron Men beat the 1961 Alabama Crimson Tide as the greatest team of all time.

While 1899 has no one specifically listed with the Official NCAA Division I Football Records Book, Sewanee is widely regarded as the National Champion in 1899.

Sewanee was a charter member of the Southeastern Conference upon its formation in 1932. Sewanee is now a member of the Southern Athletic Association offering 11 varsity sports for men and 13 for women, Sewanee: The University of the South is a private, coeducational liberal arts college. Affectionately, called "The Mountain" consists of 13,000 acres of scenic mountain property atop the Cumberland Plateau.

The school was ranked 38th in the 2014 U.S. News & World Report list of liberal arts colleges. In 2013, Forbes ranked it 91st on its America's Top Colleges list.

The University campus is consistently rated in the top 5 most beautiful campuses in the United States.
