Commissioners Oppose Proposed Privatization of Davy Crockett Park

At this month's regular session meeting of the county commission, commissioners Chris D. Jackson and Scott Franks are sponsoring a resolution that urges state officials to oppose the proposed privatization of Davy Crockett State Park.

The local park is one of the 11 state parks and marinas under consideration to be privatized by the Haslam Administration.

Jackson and Franks said they are concerned that if the park does get privatized, locals could suffer due to the loss of accessibility, higher fees for the use of park facilities and a loss of programs that are currently offered by the park.

They said they support the notion that Davy Crockett Park should be remain inherently government and focus on providing social value to our community, not making higher profits at the expense of the people of Lawrence County.

The Tennessee State Employees Association also opposes the proposed privatization plan noting that state parks already operate in the black and that privatization could lead to job loss for local employees who could be replaced by the private entity taking over.

The measure will be voted on at the March 25th Regular Session meeting. The meeting starts at 5:00 PM and is open to the public.
