Local Cattlemen’s Association Members Garner State Awards

The Lawrence/Wayne County Cattlemen’s Association recently nominated 2 of its members for 2 of the 3 state awards that are presented each year at the Tennessee Cattlemen’s Association Annual Convention. Bill Legg of West Point won the 2014 “Cow Calf Producer of the Year” and Patricia McDougal of Giles County won the 2014 “Business Person of the Year” Award.

These nominees were recently recognized at the 2014 Annual Convention held this past month at Pigeon Forge.

Bill Legg---2014 Tennessee Cattlemen’s Association Cow/Calf Producer of the Year

In 1970 Marion Legg bought a farm in West Point, TN. His son Bill was a senior in high school and that was Bill’s first taste of production agriculture and he was hooked. Bill bought his first farm 12 years later while serving as an officer on Merchant Ships.

He would ship out for 2 months and return to farm for 2 months with his dad. Since 1996 Bill has been farming full time and he has absolutely no regrets. A staple in Bill’s life was his dad-- Mr. Marion Legg.

Almost every beef cattle educational event Bill went to over the last few years you could always find Mr. Marion tagging along with a big smile and kind word for everyone he would see. Mr. Marion passed away last year at the age of 95 leaving his legacy and his farm to his loyal and loving son –Bill.

Bill currently farms 1,650 total acres of timber, pasture and row crops. Bill’s passion is his herd of 80 commercial cows and he really strives to both manage his cows and his forages to maximize his resources. He describes his operation as a “Bare-Bones, No Frill, Low Input Cow/Calf Operation.  Bill backgrounds all his calves excluding his replacement heifers. His marketing strategy is mostly private treaty.

Bill is very active in his community and he is extremely supportive of the beef and forage industry. His leadership is a valued asset to the beef industry as is noted in all the organizations that he works hard to support.

He is past president of the Tennessee Forage and Grassland Council, current treasurer of the Lawrence/Wayne County Cattlemen’s Association, board member of the Lower Middle Tennessee Cattlemen’s Association, Farm Credit Advisory Board Member, and member of the Lawrence County Agriculture Committee.

Patricia McDougal----2014 Tennessee Cattlemen’s Association Business Person of the Year

Over 25 years ago, Patricia McDougaL, who was employed at a dairy, attended an artificial insemination course. The instructors of the school saw potential in her, therefore, they urged her to start her own business.

Patricia started small with only an old truck, a breeding kit, a semen tank, a car seat with an infant in the front, and a dream of helping cattle producers improve the genetics of the herd.

She knew that hard work, excellent customer service, and establishing trust with the client were keys to the success of her business. Patricia stays on the cutting edge of technological advances in Reproductive Physiology and she embraces these changes.

As a cattle producer herself, she understands that her Clients have other jobs and responsibilities, so she works around the producer’s schedule regardless of how early or late the cow must be bred. She is extremely punctual and makes sure to always keep open communication with the client.

She strives to offer her clients a “one stop shop” for semen, nitrogen, and supplies. Her clients are able to order semen from any semen company and she works hard to find the bulls her clients ask for.

Patricia has a huge heart and a deep love for the cattle industry. Sure she has contributed to the Tennessee beef cattle industry through the obvious routes of genetics and reproduction, however, she contributes in numerous other ways.

She is active in both the Giles and Lawrence/Wayne County Cattlemen’s Associations and she is currently serving as President of the South Central Tennessee Angus Association.  Patricia believes that youth are the future of the cattle industry, therefore, she contributes to awards and scholarships in order to support these youth. She frequents youth cattle shows and participates in events to further educate youth on the importance of the cattle industry.

The Tennessee Cattlemen’s Association Mission is to provide the cattle feeders and producers in the State of Tennessee with an organization through which they may function collectively to protect their interests and work toward the solution of cattle industry problems; and to build the necessary good-will that will bring both governmental and public esteem and recognition to the industry. The Lawrence/Wayne County Association boast the 2nd largest membership in the state.
