A survey worth taking
Does anyone actually enjoy taking surveys? If you’re like me, you make a wide circle around anyone standing in a mall or an airport holding a clipboard. Surveys are usually tedious, take more time than promised, and are sometimes just plain silly.
That being said, I want to encourage everyone to take part in a survey that can have a great impact on our future. It (really does) take about 20 minutes to complete and will be available through March 15 at www.tn.gov/broadband.
It’s ironic but especially important for people without internet access to take this survey. I urge you to use a computer at work, borrow a friend’s phone or use public access computers at the library for this short task.
The survey is sponsored by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, and was developed after TNECD Commissioner Randy Boyd made a listening tour across the state last year.
In every region he heard that Tennesseans lack affordable, fast, and reliable internet service, and we know that’s true for most Lawrence Countians. The survey is designed to identify gaps in broadband access so TNECD and the telecommunications industry can address them.
“Tennessee’s economic future is directly tied to our broadband access,” Boyd said in a press release. “Broadband access impacts our quality of life, educational opportunities, healthcare and our businesses’ ability to compete.”
It’s vital that Lawrence County is well represented - by residents and business people - in the assessment, so we can benefit from the solutions that TNECD is also searching for.
The press release continues, “In addition to the demand assessment, TNECD will partner with the telecommunications industry and other stakeholders to identify access gaps and evaluate options and costs to build out unserved and underserved areas of the state.” TNECD has engaged Strategic Networks Groups (SNG) and NEO Fiber, which have extensive experience helping states form broadband Internet access plans.
“High-speed Internet access has become a standard need for businesses and educational institutions around the world, and rural Tennessee is no different. Help us make sure every Tennessean’s voice is heard on this important topic by taking the survey,” said TNCED’s Assistant Commissioner of Rural Development Amy New.
The department will deliver a full report and policy recommendations derived from the assessment to Governor Bill Haslam in June.
