Driver’s License Kiosk Will Be Replaced With In-Person Service
Lawrenceburg leaders took action Thursday morning that will once again allow residents “in-person service” when renewing driver’s licenses, and eliminate the kiosk that has provided access since the closure of the local driver service center.
Members of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council have agreed to enter into a contract with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s Driver Services Division to install the “manned” station inside the Lawrenceburg Municipal Complex.
City Administrator Chris Shaffer explained, “When they closed the driver’s license service center here in Lawrenceburg we tried our best to keep that here. We were unable to do so, but we were able to get the kiosk which allowed our residents to still come to the city administration building and update and renew their driver’s licenses.
“The state has allowed county clerk offices to enter into an agreement where they provide the services with an in-person type driver’s license center and receive $4 per transaction. The state recently allowed municipal governments to also do the same. So we’re taking advantage of that and we’re going to replace the kiosk machine with an in-person driver’s license center.”
Shaffer pointed out, “This will not be for commercial driver’s licenses or driver’s exams. This will be for renewal, name and information changes, and lost driver’s licenses. We’re hoping that this will allow the citizens a place to come do this in person so they don’t have to go out of town to renew their driver’s license.”
Mayor Keith Durham stated, “This is a giant step forward for our city and cities across the State of Tennessee… This is something that has been in the works for well over a year now. The City of Lawrenceburg led the battle throughout the state to get these services pushed to the municipalities, not just to the county clerk’s offices.”
Durham said that the city is “pushing” to have additional services added in the future so that the center will prove to be even more convenient.
